Practical experience

Riordan Consulting was founded by Retta M. Riordan, a nationally renowned former pharmaceutical compliance officer with experience designing, developing, and implementing a compliance program. She has success in integrating compliance and ethics into business activities and in balancing business strategies and goals with protection of the client. She is skilled in partnering with business teams to achieve business objectives.

Retta was recruited as the first Business Ethics and Compliance Officer for Organon Biosciences (now Merck). At Organon, she designed, developed, and implemented the company's first compliance program. Her activities included: conducting gap analyses and risk assessments, drafting numerous policies and procedures, creating and conducting all compliance training programs, and conducting monitoring and investigations, as well as instilling a compliant culture throughout the organization.

She brought to the compliance function her background as a healthcare attorney with extensive expertise in fraud and abuse, regulatory issues, Medicare and Medicaid, patient privacy, managed care, and public policy affecting pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Prior to becoming a compliance officer, she served as in-house counsel for Schering-Plough (now Merck) and Pharmacia (now Pfizer). While serving as Assistant General Counsel at C.R. Bard, she developed a training program and trained over 900 employees on the then-new AdvaMed Code. Before becoming an in-house attorney, Retta was a healthcare lawyer for several law firms and served as Associate General Counsel for AdvaMed (then HIMA, the Health Industry Manufacturers Association), a medical device trade association in Washington, DC, where she drafted the industry's first code of conduct.

Retta received her JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was an editor on the Law and Policy in International Business Journal (now International Law Journal), and her BA in Political Science from George Washington University, both in Washington, DC.
